Stonington and it’s surrounding community offer some of the most beautiful scenery on Maine's coast. An active fishing fleet works Penobscot Bay amidst the schooners, yachts, canoes, kayaks and other pleasure crafts of summer visitors. Boat trips to Isle au Haut, a part of Acadia National Park, leave from Stonington daily. Other boating day trips are offered locally, as are canoe and kayak rentals on a seasonal basis.

Penobscot Bay and the Stonington archipeligo is known for some of the best kayaking and boating on the east coast. There are numerous gorgeous islands, some of which you can hike and picnic on, there is also plentiful marine wildlife including; eagles, osprey, sea ducks, seals, and porpoises to watch.

The island offers a unique variety of galleries; antique and regional craft shops, the Granite Museum, the Island Historical Society Museum, the nationally renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, gift stores, Stonington Opera House, Dave's Guide Service, Old Quarry Ocean Adventures, and a wide selection of dining establishments offering fresh local seafood. Also available is lodging within homes in the area, such as the Loft and the Ledge on Highland Ave. There are also various nature trails and a good kayak launching site near Boyce's Motel.
